Darger: The Henry Darger Collection at the American Folk Art Museum
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (December, 2001)
Authors: Henry Darger, Brooke Davis Anderson, American Folk Art Museum, and Michel Thevoz
Average review score:

3rd Favorite Darger Book
For sheer size and volume, Henry Darger in the Realms of the Unreal is the best bet. An exhaustive essay into Darger's background and psychology and numerous reproductions, some not in any of the other darger books, all in color. The one drawback of the book is that because it is so big (500+ pages), it doesn't hold together well at the binding and pages start to become loose. But this is an essential Darger book to have.

The other essential Darger book is Henry Darger: Art and Selected Writings. The essay portion wasn't as interesting to me as the Unreality of Being book, but this has just as many reproductions and maybe more. Also the book is a more manageable size, the reproductions seem a little better, and it's a great single volume.

The book from the American Folk Art Museum is much smaller than the other 2 in number of pages, the reproductions seem smaller, and there's even less text than the other two books. However, it is the least expensive by a significant amount making it the "bargain" Darger book. For that reason, it would be a good buy for a casual Darger fan. But if you already have the first two books, this one is too repetitive. If you are a big Darger fan, you should try and make the visit to see the exhibition at the Folk Art Museum in New York. Being able to see them in person is a great experience. The size, colors, texture are almost too much to take in, so many details....they are amazing to look at.

Darger: madman or genius
I must admit that before i picked up this volume, i wasnt certain of the answer to the aforementioned question. I knew about him, had read bits and pieces about him, but did not know the full scope of his talent.

This book allows the reader to see not just his art, but to catch a glimpse of the sheer magnitude of his madness/genius. The art work is brilliantly reproduced (seeing his stack of journals made the book worthwhile for me).

If you are at all interested in seeing the work and a glimpse of the life of one of the outsider art masters, i suggest that you pick up this book at once.

English Costume from the Early Middle Ages Through the Sixteenth Century
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 2001)
Author: Iris English Costume from the Fourteenth Through the Nineteen Brooke
Average review score:

Shallow Overview of Medieval Costume
This is probably a great book for the beginner, but if you are looking for either a serious study of medieval costume or a how-to, you will probably be disappointed.

This book goes into a lot of detail about medieval costume with little documentation to back it up. There are no tips on construction and no actual pictures. Instead, the author relies on romanticized line drawings of people in costume with the emphasis apparently on the people, rather than the costume.

Once again, however, if you are an absolute beginner with little to no knowledge of medieval costuming, this book is an economical way to catch-up. It has a very wide scope. I did not note anything blatantly wrong, and the drawings, unhelpful as they are from a construction viewpoint, do show the costumes in context and as they would actually appear on the (idealized) human form.

Very good children's costume books
I have fond memories of checking out the original printing of these books from my local public library as a child. They placed these books in the children's section- for readers 8 and up. And I checked out those hardcover books over and over. Those books may have helped spark my lifelong interest in historical costume. Ms. Brooke's rendering of the costumes are very clear, and often they are presented in groups as if you were looking into a scene in a story or play. Excellent books for older children and young teens interested in costume history.

Pulse Diagnosis
Published in Paperback by Aurora Press (August, 1993)
Authors: R. B. Amber, Huynh Hoc Ku, G. M. Seifert, Reuben Amber, and A. M. Brooke
Average review score:

A solid rendition of Li Shi-zhen
First published in 1981, this is among the oldest, if not the oldest translation into English of Li Shi-zhen's Bin Hu Mai Xue, or Lakeside Master's Treatise on the Pulse. Although Bob Flaws' Secret of Pulse Diagnosis is perhaps more engaging, this is a fine presentation of the Bin Hu Mai Xue material.

All aspects of the Bin Hu Mai Xue are present here, including relevant theory, techniques of palpation, normal pulse images, pathological pulse images, and special chapters on pregnancy, pediatric examination, and the pulse images of the eight extraordinary vessels. Each pulse image is diagrammed for the benefit of visual learners, and there is a glossary of pulse image names and disease descriptions which gives an English translation, Chinese characters, and Pinyin romanization with tone marks for each entry.

This book is succinct, reasonably clear, and can serve equally well as a reference or a class textbook.

A good reference book
Ive been reading TCM books for some time now. I find this book full of uselful information. But it could include some graphs or pictures about the points used to taking the pulse. It only explains their positions in a small paragraph and in my opinion not very well. But I still think it is a must have.

A Simple Guide to Spss for Windows: For Versions 6.0, 6.1, 7.0, and 7.5

Authors: Lee A. Kirkpatrick, Brooke C. Feeney, and Jane Kirkpatrick

Don't expect much!!
Nicely organized book. However, does not explain all the items present in the SPSS menus.
The author concentrated on the statistical part of the software, and in a very simple way. If you never used SPSS before find another book.

an excellent introduction
i've used this book in statistics classes i've taught for the past two years. it provides students who are just beginning to study statistics with the basics necessary to carry out elementary statistical procedures. it is not intended for advanced users. bottom line: if your just starting to use spss, this would be a really useful book to have.

The 5 in 10 Chicken Breast Cookbook: 5 Ingredients in 10 Minutes or Less
Published in Hardcover by Hearst Books (November, 1993)
Authors: Melanie Barnard, Brooke Dojny, and Melanie Barndard
Average review score:

5 in 10 Chicken Breast Cookbook:
This is a wonderful recipe book for chicken lovers. The recipes in the book are very easy to make and most of the ingredients are usually items that you normally have in your kitchen. I usually use 1 or 2 recipes from the book per week. Kids enjoy the meals just as much as their parents do. I hope that the book will come back into print. It is a shame that others can not enjoy these delicious chicken recipes.

Administrators and Their Service: The Sarawak Administrative Service Under the Brooke Rajahs and British Colonial Rule (South-East Asian Historical Monographs)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (December, 1999)
Authors: Naimah S. Talib, Naimah S. Talib, and Naimah

Administrators and Their Service : The Sarawak Administrativ
When English adventurer, James Brooke, first set foot in Sarawak in 1839, little did he know that two years later he would be ruler of the state, and that for a hundred years, his family would control the small Southeast Asian nation, and expand its boundaries to what it is today. Although the Brookes administered Sarawak as their own little kingdom, and without interference from any western power, they were influenced by British colonial administration in the Malay states. Naimah Talib does a very credible job of documenting the similarities and the differences between the Brooke administration of Sarawak and the British administration of their Asian colonies. Her treatment of the periods of Charles Brooke's rule (1868-1917) and Vyner Brooke's (1917-1941) are excellent, but the chapter on James Brooke's rule from 1841-1868 could have been better developed. This was the beginning of Brooke administration in Sarawak -- the time when the foundation was being built, and it deserved a deeper, more thorough examination. On the whole this is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the how and why of Brooke administration of Sarawak.

Air War over Italy
Published in Hardcover by Ian Allan Pub (February, 2000)
Author: Andrew Brookes
Average review score:

The real story of Catch 22
This is an well-written account which, although it does occasionally get bogged down in the mass of detail which Brookes has accumulated on this crucial but often ignored episode of the war, concentrates equally on the human side, and on the effects on those servicemen involved, both Allied and Axis . As far as is possible in this type of historical writing, Brookes allows the men involved to tell their own story in their own words. The informal, almost chatty style of Brookes' writing makes this a riveting read from start to finish.

Amalgamemnon
Published in Paperback by Dalkey Archive Pr (July, 1994)
Author: Christine Brooke-Rose
Average review score:

A virtuoso monologue
To give a plot synopsis of this novel would be almost pointless because the book is all about voice. The narrator spills out words and puns and jams them together (as in the title) to make new words, thus forcing the reader to think in new ways about how the words relate. It is also a novel of ideas, and in many ways, a novel about power. The narrator posits herself as Cassandra to the various Agamemnon's (thus amalgamemnon) that ignore her. Technnology, capitalism, and Wester, male-dominated society are all forces that she struggles with. Interestingly, Brooke-Rose also foresees the power of terrorism and the threat of fundamentalism that responds to these same sources of powers. To be sure, though, this is mostly a novel about language, and if you don't enjoy playful, postmodern punning, then skip this one.
